Shaken on April 23rd: A Note on the Silivri Earthquake
Shaken on April 23rd: A Note on the Silivri Earthquake
On the morning of April 23, 2025, Istanbul once again faced the harsh reality of earthquakes. At around 10:42 a.m., a 6.2 magnitude quake centered in Silivri was strongly felt across many parts of the city.
We were at home when it happened. My son was getting ready to visit a friend, my husband was sitting on the balcony, and I was in the living room knitting while watching TV. Everything seemed so ordinary… until a notification popped up on my husband’s phone. At first, we didn’t understand what it was, but it turned out to be an earthquake warning.
Moments later, I heard my husband shout, “It’s an earthquake!” The shaking was intense. My son and I tried to do the Drop-Cover-Hold On maneuver next to the couches in the living room. But that moment reminded me once again: if you haven’t practiced it beforehand, nothing comes naturally. As they say, without drills, it's hard to remember what to do when it matters most. Theory and practice blur in the chaos.
I wanted to write this post not only to remember that moment but also to help others prepare. Please take a moment to read the basic but vital information below—and share it with your loved ones.
✅ What To Do Before, During, and After an Earthquake
Before the Earthquake:
-
Secure heavy furniture and appliances.
-
Prepare an emergency kit (water, non-perishable food, whistle, flashlight, medications, etc.).
-
Create an emergency plan with your family and designate a meeting point.
During the Earthquake:
-
Drop-Cover-Hold On: Protect your head and neck by taking cover under sturdy furniture or against an interior wall.
-
Stay away from windows and items that could fall.
-
Do not use elevators.
-
If you’re indoors, stay indoors. Do not rush outside during shaking.
After the Earthquake:
-
Remain calm and move to an open area, if safe.
-
Turn off gas, water, and electricity if needed.
-
Follow official announcements and updates.
-
Avoid unnecessary phone use—keep lines clear for emergencies.
-
If help is needed, call 112, but avoid non-urgent calls.
Sending heartfelt wishes of safety to everyone across Turkey. I hope this earthquake reminds us all once again of the importance of being prepared. Take a few minutes today to review your home and emergency plans with your family.
